Speaking to USA TODAY, Wyclef Jean, a longtime supporter and collaborator of Shakira, described her impact as a “global phenomenon.” He added, “She’s like family. Shakira defies categorization; she takes Latin music and constantly redefines its boundaries.

Shakira first won a Moon Person trophy in 2000 in the International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North) category. In a remarkable achievement, she once again made history this year by becoming the first female vocalist to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with a Spanish-language track, thanks to her songs “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53” and “TQG” featuring Karol G.

Notably, Shakira previously made VMAs history in 2005 when she delivered the first-ever performance entirely in Spanish with her hit song “La Tortura” featuring Alejandro Sanz. Her last VMAs appearance before this year was in 2006, when she set the stage on fire with her iconic single “Hips Don’t Lie,” alongside Wyclef Jean.
